I was having a language class where I had to take it in another classroom. Under the desk of where i seated, I chanced upon an anime drawing. I was pissed. I thought to myself:
” No way, I doubt it is drawn, IT MUST BE TRACED! Moreover, I think I can do better anyway!”
I started my journey of drawing and making art. For a long time, I’d say for more than 4 years, I’ve been drawing without really knowing why I should draw and why I’m drawing. I just followed the crowd and moved.
I went from anime, to more fine art stuff, to 3d, to flash etc etc etc. The more choices I had, the more I wondered why I was doing them. But I just went on. For a period of time I was really stale and dry because of relationship problems. Almost wasted my life away, no motivation, health deteriorate.
So in my final semester of my current education, I had a module called Art and Design History.
Well it probably sounded really dry, but I had a special lecturer who gave us the class.
Everyone thought whatever she said was crappy, irrelevant, lame, stupid or useless. But to me this module is probably the most life-altering module I ever had up till now.
The lecturer didn’t go into the dry details about those history, instead she went more about our personal feelings and our awareness towards it. And from there, we were guided to know why or how we churn out art. Her lectures were not straightforward though so they were misinterpreted as crap.
If you ask me why I draw or make art now, I might not give a perfect answer because there isn’t.
I can only say I make art because it’s me. Which is why I do not have a fixed style or method to making art. Because I’m ever changing. I’m learning as a human as a person every second every minute every hour.
Most importantly, I’ve learnt to make art that’s most truthful to myself. With that, I realise in this society, you create a meaning or purpose when you have influenced people or helped them. I will slowly branch out this art in me to influence and help people.
Feeling a little nostalgic after looking thru all my sketchbooks and reviewing what I’ve done these 5 years. It’s gonna be positive ahead and I wish everyone will make greater art than before!
